Elon Musk has sparked controversy by urging his X followers to cancel Netflix subscriptions over transgender characters in shows like Dead End: Paranormal Park and The Baby-Sitters Club.
Labeling the content as promoting a “woke agenda,” Musk’s campaign has fueled a broader debate about diversity in media, drawing both support and criticism.
Musk’s call began with a repost targeting Dead End: Paranormal Park, a 2022 animated series with a transgender protagonist, which he deemed “not okay” for kids.
He also criticized a 2023 CoComelon Lane episode showing a child exploring gender expression, calling it “messed up.”
Both shows were canceled (Dead End in 2023, Baby-Sitters Club in 2022). Conservative figures like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) echoed Musk, accusing Netflix of pushing “radical gender ideology.”
The campaign aligns with conservative pushback against diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in media, amplified by the Trump administration’s 2025 ban on gender-affirming care for minors and labeling of DEI programs as “illegal.”
FCC chair Brendan Carr has pressured companies to drop DEI policies, indirectly affecting streamers like Netflix.
The platform’s 2021 inclusion report highlighted diverse representation, with 50% of leads being women and 26% of directors from underrepresented groups, but such efforts now face scrutiny.
Some media companies are retreating. Disney pulled a 2024 Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur episode over its transgender character, a trend noted in GLAAD’s 2024 report.
The Human Rights Campaign warns that reducing visibility harms marginalized groups, while Moms for Liberty supports limiting “inappropriate” content.
