MENLO PARK, California, December 29, 2025 – Meta Platforms has acquired Manus, a Singapore-headquartered artificial intelligence startup known for its general-purpose AI agent, to accelerate development of autonomous features across its family of apps.

Manus, operated by Butterfly Effect Technology and originally founded in China before relocating to Singapore, launched its flagship agent earlier this year.

The tool handles complex tasks with minimal input, including research, workflow automation, and multi-step execution.

Manus positioned it as outperforming OpenAI’s DeepResearch in benchmarks and offered free real-world task completion to users on X to demonstrate capabilities.

Meta stated the acquisition will integrate Manus into its AI efforts while continuing to offer the service independently.

“Manus is already serving the daily needs of millions of users and businesses worldwide,” the company said, citing over 147 trillion tokens processed and more than 80 million virtual computers created this year. Manus reported an annual recurring revenue run rate above $125 million.

Financial terms were not disclosed. Manus had secured funding from investors, including Benchmark, achieving $100 million ARR within eight months of launch.

The deal reflects Meta’s focus on agentic AI—systems that act independently on user intent—as competition intensifies with OpenAI and Google. Integration could enhance productivity in WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook.

Manus’s Singapore base aligns with a trend among Chinese-origin tech firms seeking operational stability amid U.S.-China tensions.

Regulatory review is pending, with closure anticipated in 2026.
