This was said by Epic Games itself through its Twitter handle and shall be available till the 21st of May this year.

Not so long after the company announced making it free, gamers have flocked at the Epic Games Store, crashing it and causing downtime already. Epic Games tweeted saying the condition and will be returning soon. Until then make sure you have all the resources for playing this game for free.
