MOUNTAIN VIEW, California, January 15, 2026 — Google has rolled out a new AI-powered meme creation tool in Google Photos, allowing users to transform their personal images into popular meme formats with just a few taps, the company announced today.
The feature, available globally to users with the latest Google Photos app update, lets people select a photo from their library and choose from dozens of classic meme templates—including “Distracted Boyfriend,” “Drake Hotline Bling,” and “This Is Fine.”
The AI automatically detects faces, crops appropriately, adds text overlays, and applies stylistic adjustments to match the meme’s aesthetic. Users can customize captions, fonts, and stickers before sharing directly to social media or saving to their device.
Google emphasized that the tool runs primarily on-device, primarily using the TensorFlow Lite model to preserve privacy and enable offline use. No photos or generated memes are sent to servers unless the user chooses to share them.
The company also added content filters to block inappropriate or harmful content, though early user reports indicate occasional glitches with face detection in group photos or at unusual angles.
The meme generator builds on existing AI editing tools in Google Photos, such as Magic Editor and Best Take, and is part of Google’s broader push to make AI creative features more accessible. It’s currently available only in English, with support for additional languages planned in the coming months.
Early reactions on social media have been mixed. Some users praised the simplicity and fun factor, while others raised concerns about potential misuse for creating misleading or offensive content. Google said it is monitoring feedback and will refine safety measures based on real-world use.
The feature is free for all Google Photos users and does not require a Google One subscription.
