MOUNTAIN VIEW, California, December 2, 2025 – Google has begun testing AI -generated summaries in place of traditional news headlines within its Discover feed for a limited user group, a change that has provoked backlash for creating misleading and sensationalized content that warps original reporting.

The trial swaps publisher-written headlines with concise AI phrases intended to provide “topic details” upfront, aiming to help users grasp story essence before clicking.

Early instances, however, have yielded garbled results: a Baldur’s Gate 3 article became “BG3 players exploit children”; a wireless charging story twisted into “Qi2 slows older Pixels”; and a sales data piece inflated to “AMD GPU tops Nvidia.”

Other examples include “Schedule 1 farming backup” for a game developer’s contingency plan and “AI tag debate heats” for a nuanced gaming disclosure discussion.

The Verge’s examination revealed the AI condenses headlines to four words or fewer, often stripping context and injecting drama. A disclosure—”Generated with AI, which can make mistakes”—appears only after selecting “See more,” leaving many alterations unmarked.

Google spokesperson Mallory Deleon described it as “a small UI experiment for a subset of Discover users. We are testing a new design that changes the placement of existing headlines to make topic details easier to digest before they explore links from across the web.”

Critics, including Verge senior editor Andrew Webster, decried the approach as eroding journalistic craft. “If we wrote those misleading headlines, readers would rip us a new one — but Google is experimentally beginning to replace the original headlines on stories it serves with AI nonsense like that. Come on,” Webster wrote. Colleague Tom Warren added: “lol wtf Google.”

The test exacerbates tensions between Google and publishers, who already face declining traffic from AI-driven features in Search and Discover. By overriding headlines, the experiment could further confuse readers and diminish incentives for quality journalism, accelerating the open web’s erosion.

Google has not detailed expansion plans, but the backlash highlights risks in AI curation: convenience at the cost of clarity and credibility.
