NEW YORK, November 30, 2025 – Google CEO Sundar Pichai advocated for a cohesive national approach to AI regulation during a Fox News interview, cautioning that fragmented state laws could undermine U.S. competitiveness against China’s swift technological strides.

Appearing on Fox News Sunday with host Shannon Bream, Pichai pointed to over 1,000 AI-related bills advancing through state legislatures, creating a regulatory patchwork that burdens companies.

“How do you cope with those varied regulations, and how do you compete with countries like China, which are moving fast in this technology? So I think we have to get the balance right,” he said. He proposed federal standards to balance innovation with necessary safeguards, allowing firms to operate under uniform rules.

Pichai framed AI as a dual-edged tool, capable of accelerating drug discoveries and cancer therapies but also enabling misuse by adversaries. “Any technology has a dual side to it,” he noted, likening current debates to early concerns over Google Search 25 years ago.

He stressed defensive applications, such as AI detecting scams and hacking, and highlighted Google’s SynthID tool for watermarking AI-generated media to combat deepfakes.

On the global stage, Pichai urged collaborative frameworks to prevent AI weaponization. “We have to develop international frameworks of cooperation so that we don’t weaponize these technologies against each other,” he said.

He also teased Google’s “Suncatcher” initiative for solar-powered orbital data centers, envisioning them as a normalized solution within a decade.

A national strategy could sharpen America’s edge, but without it, internal divisions may hand rivals an unintended advantage.
