CUPERTINO, California, January 29, 2026 — Apple has acquired QAI, a London-based startup specializing in advanced audio processing and generative sound AI, the company confirmed Wednesday. The deal aims to enhance Siri’s voice capabilities and expand spatial audio technologies across iPhone, AirPods, and future hardware.

QAI, founded in 2021 by former researchers from DeepMind and Sony, has developed proprietary models for real-time voice synthesis, noise suppression, spatial sound generation, and personalized audio rendering.

The startup’s technology enables dynamic adjustment of soundscapes based on user environment, head movement, and contextual cues—features that align closely with Apple’s focus on immersive audio experiences.

Financial terms were not disclosed. QAI’s team, including its core engineering group, will join Apple’s machine learning and audio divisions. The startup had raised approximately $45 million in funding from investors including Index Ventures and LocalGlobe prior to the acquisition.

Apple stated the acquisition will “accelerate our work on delivering even more natural and intelligent audio experiences.” The company highlighted QAI’s contributions to improving Siri’s speech recognition in noisy environments and advancing personalized spatial audio for movies, music, and calls. Integration is expected to appear in future iOS updates and next-generation AirPods models.

The move follows Apple’s ongoing push to strengthen in-house AI amid competition from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. Earlier this year, Apple integrated select OpenAI features into Apple Intelligence with user consent, while expanding its own foundation models. Acquiring specialized audio AI talent reflects a strategy of targeted purchases to fill capability gaps quickly.

QAI’s technology has been used in professional audio tools and accessibility applications. Its models support low-latency voice cloning and adaptive soundscapes, areas where Apple has invested heavily through acquisitions such as Xnor.ai (edge AI) and DarwinAI (efficient neural networks).

The deal awaits standard regulatory review in the UK and EU, with closure anticipated in the coming months. Apple has made more than 30 AI-related acquisitions since 2017.
